Career Start and Career Boost Programs
The Career Start and Career Boost programs give eligible Queenslanders access to government subsidised qualifications
Career Start
Career Start is available to eligible applicants of CUA20620 Certificate II in Music and CUA30920 Certificate III in Music.
Under Career Start, a student may access up to 2 subsidised training places through one of the following options:
- a qualification in a certificate III under the general training pathway and an apprenticeship/traineeship, noting that if the apprenticeship/traineeship is done first, the student is no longer eligible to access a general training pathway qualification under Career Start
- or
- two apprenticeships/traineeships at either a certificate II or III level, including school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs).
In addition, under Career Start, students may access one subsidised introductory-level skill set.
A student cannot do 2 general training pathway qualifications under Career Start.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a subsidised place in this qualification under the Career Start program, you must be intending to seek work, self-employment, or further training in the music industry after completing the course.
This includes roles such as a musician, performer, music teacher, studio technician, music business owner, or other relevant positions in the music sector.
Further training may include higher-level music or music industry qualifications such as a Certificate IV, Diploma, or university-level study.
General training pathway
To be eligible, you must:
- be aged 15 years or older, and no longer in school
- permanently live in Queensland
- be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with an eligible visa subclass
- not already have a certificate III or higher qualification completed within the last 10 years (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count)
- not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by us (Department of Trade, Employment and Training) or not (foundation skills qualification don’t count).
Along with the eligibility criteria above, specific entry restrictions or exemptions may apply to certain subsidised qualifications and skill sets. These are set by industry or sector requirements, as well as national training package guidelines.
Career Boost
Career Boost is available to eligible applicants of CUA50825 Diploma of Music.
Under Career Boost, a student may access either:
- one subsidised training place in either a certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma qualification under the general training pathway
- or
- a higher level apprenticeship/traineeship in a certificate IV or above.
In addition, under Career Boost, students may access 2 subsidised skill sets in priority industries or sectors.
If the student has already accessed 2 apprenticeships/traineeships through a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT) or Career Start within the last 10 years, they are not eligible to undertake an apprenticeship/traineeship under Career Boost.
A student cannot do 2 general training pathway qualifications under Career Boost.

To be eligible for a subsidised place in this qualification under the Career Boost program, you must already be working in the music industry and seeking to build higher-level skills to support your career progression.
This includes roles such as a musician, performer, music teacher, studio technician, music business owner, or other relevant positions in the music sector.
General training pathway
To access a subsidised training place under Career Boost, a student must also meet the following criteria:
- To be eligible, you must:
- be aged 15 years or older, and no longer in school
- permanently live in Queensland
- be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with an eligible visa subclass
- not already have a certificate IV or higher qualification (including tertiary qualifications) completed within the last 10 years* (qualifications completed as a school student, and foundation skills qualifications don’t count)
- not be enrolled in another qualification, even if it’s on hold or deferred, whether funded by us (Department of Trade, Employment and Training) or not (foundation skills qualification don’t count).
*Note: This eligibility requirement doesn’t apply to individuals seeking to enrol in a skill set.
